OLM Instrumental Music Program

4th Grade Band

Each school year, in September, the band directors host a demonstration session for 4th graders. Students aregiven the opportunity to hear current OLM band members play their instruments, and they're also given the opportunity to hold and play the various instruments. After joining, new band students are taught in 'like-instrument' groups lessons, i.e., brass class, woodwind class, or percussion class. Some classes meet after school, and some meet in the mornings. Lessons are taught once per week. Concerts are given for the student body and families during December and May.

5th Grade Band

Commonly referred to as the Junior Band, this group continues into their second year of instrumental music. They are no longer broken out into smaller classes, instead meeting and learning as one ensemble, rehearsing once per week after school. They're taught more advanced musical concepts, preparing them for entrance into the Senior Band and Jazz band, during their Middle School years. Concerts are given for the student body and families during December and May.

Even though continuing band students are in our database, we require that they re-register each year, in order to keep contact information up to date. Middle School Band

This group, common referred to as the Senior Band, continues on their journey of instrumental music. They meet as an ensemble, rehearsing once per week after school. Prior to concerts, they sometimes add a second rehearsal to properly prepare. They're introduced to more challenging repertoire, designed to prepare them for participation in High School band programs. This group, and the Jazz Band, participate in the “Music in the Park” competition at Six Flags in Massachusetts. The band consistently receives high marks. Concerts are given for the student body and families during December and May.

Jazz Band

This group is made up of members chosen by Mr. Takemoto. Middle school students participating in Senior Band are eligible to audition. The ensemble is taught advanced concepts in jazz interpretation and improvisation. This is an exiting group to watch, as players commonly volunteer to perform solos. They meet as an ensemble, rehearsing once per week after school. Prior to concerts, they sometimes add a second rehearsal to properly prepare. They're introduced to concepts and repertoire designed to prepare them for participation in High School jazz programs. This group, and the Senior Band, participate in the “Music in the Park” competition at Six Flags in Massachusetts. Last year, one of our young musicians received the “Best Jazz Soloist” award, competing against hundreds of other students for this honor.
